Android Web-Connected TVs

The open source OS Android will help the third-party developers to write Android-based apps to run on the Web-connected TVs.
“Android’s share in the Smartphone market is increasing, so if you want to strengthen your product line-up, it’s an operating system that you would normally want,” said Jin Sung Hae, a Seoul-based analyst at Hyundai Securities Co.
Third-party applications of Android has a growing marketplace , this will makes  the consumers could shop their  new widgets or apps from these marketplace instead of relying on their TV maker to secure new content deals with the likes of Twitter, Yahoo, Facebook, YouTube, and others.
Having Android on a TV is another way to enable Web-connected sets to download widgets like YouTube, weather, stocks, and anything else on the Android Marketplace in order to bring in more content besides just channels from a cable or satellite company.
Using Android would be a cheaper option for the TV makers as it is open source and comes pre-made, meaning that they can spend less resources on the software and more on the hardware. With connected TVs Users can search the web and get the search results and what's currently being broadcast on TV. Also they can access videos from YouTube and other sites.
Sales of Web-connectable TVs will increase about six fold to 87.6 million sets between 2009 and 2013, according to forecasts by ISuppli Corp.

Google TV
Google TV will be a connected TV that would have "home screen" where you can add bookmarks to your favorite channels, shows, websites, music, photo albums, and so on. From the looks of it, the home screen will have a list of your applications, watch list, and more on the left.
Google TV is best described as a ‘software platform for set-top boxes and HDTVs based on the Android operating system and co-developed by Google, Intel, Sony and Logitech. The project was officially announced by Google and its partners on May 20, 2010.’

Google implemented a remote control protocol that will allow third-party developers to build their own software for controlling Google TV from other devices.
Clearly, the company is throwing a lot of weight behind Google TV, and so far, it looks very promising. This is basically a way to combine all of the extensive benefits of an HTPC into a set-top box without most of the downsides—interfaces made for computer use instead of couch use, and limited control interfaces, to name a few. And, of course, because of the openness of the OS, there's potential for Google TV to be turned into a healthy game distribution platform as well.
The real measure of success will come if and when the mainstream crowd catches on to Google TV—there are so many options available that it may be overwhelming for the average TV viewer. Still, we're excited about the possibilities and are looking forward to giving Google TV a test run when it becomes available.

Samsung TV
Now is a very important time for Samsung to think about these types of things as, according to ISuppli Corp., ‘sales of Web-connectable TVs will increase about six fold to 87.6 million sets between 2009 and 2013′.
Samsung’s lead position as a TV maker may come under threat as viewers seek models that allow them to buy third-party video games and programs that do anything from forecasting the weather to measuring the string tension of a tennis racket.
About 50 percent of Samsung’s 3-D TVs offer Web-browsing features, and the portion will increase in coming years, Yoon said. Samsung will likely meet its sales target for TVs this year and will roll out more lower-priced 3-D TVs next year, he said.
Samsung aims to sell 35 million liquid-crystal-display TVs and 4 million plasma TVs this year, including more than 2 million sets that offer 3-D features. The company, which started offering 3-D sets in the U.S. in March, sold more than 1 million units by Aug. 31, giving it an 88 percent share of the U.S. 3-D TV market.

APPLE TV
Apple released a $99 TV set-top box and TV show rentals from the Internet. The company has about 250,000 apps available, compared with about 70,000 for Google’s Android operating system.
Apple TV will rent high-definition TV programs for 99 cents and first-run movies for $4.99 and will work with Netflix Inc.’s online service, Apple’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs said last week. To provide the TV rental service, Apple struck deals with Walt Disney Co.’s ABC and News Corp.’s Fox, Jobs said.
Apple fueled its expansion into music players and phones by developing the iTunes software that made it easier to buy and organize songs, TV shows and games and is expanding the model to television.

  1. I, personally, love the Google TV platform. I own a Logitech Revue w/ Google TV and the way it integrates with my DISH Network DVR to find all the content I could possibly want to watch is amazing. And as a DISH employee I can say that the Revue is for sale to DISH customers for only $179. I highly suggest checking it out at dish.com/GoogleTV
