E-READERS between price drop and sales increase in 2011
Some analysts expected that some e-readers with black-and-white displays could drop its prices to hit $50 in 2011
Also they said that declining prices of e-readers is an indication that its market is young and likely to remain in a state of uncertainty for a few more years.
Some experts are also asking for how long the black-and-white e-ink e-readers will survive in the face of the full-color tablet computers.
For Example IPAD is offering multimedia functionality and a backlit 9.7-in. LED display.
Sales of e-readers are expected to increase 68.3 percent in 2011, to more than 11 million units, according to a December report from Gartner.
Samsung, Sony, Amazon and others are facing a growing threat from the full-color tablet computers. A recent survey from ChangeWave Research suggested that the iPad’s share of the e-reader market had expanded from 16 percent to 32 percent between August and November 2010, even as the Kindle’s dipped from 62 percent to 47 percent.
Amazon: Kindle EBooks
Amazon reports that Kindle eBooks are outselling paperbacks sold via its online storefront, but sales figures for the Kindle e-reader remain elusive.
"Last July we announced that Kindle books had passed hardcovers and predicted that Kindle would surpass paperbacks in the second quarter of this year," Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos wrote in a Jan. 27 statement, "so this milestone has come even sooner than we expected—and it's on top of continued growth in paperback sales."
Samsung Targets E-Reader Market

“In the future, consumers will need products that not only support full color and video, but also offer readability in all lighting conditions and gives them ultimate freedom and portability,” said Johan Feenstra, CEO of Liquavista. “Being part of Samsung, we can all be sure that electrowetting display technology will find its way to the market in the fastest possible time.”
"The connected e-reader market has grown dramatically during the past two years, driven by sales of Amazon's e-readers, primarily in North America," Hugues De La Vergne, principal research analyst at Gartner, wrote in a Dec. 8 statement posted on Gartner's corporate Website. However, "growth in North American and other markets will remain constrained by the success of media tablets, such as the Apple iPad."
Some e-reader manufacturers are trying to blunt with the introduction of color screens. As an example Barnes & Noble's Nook Color includes a full-color 7-inch display, Wi-Fi capability, Web surfing and social network sharing for the selected passages from eBooks via Facebook and Twitter.
Competitions in E-READER MARKET

Last December Google launched its eBook storefront with 3 million titles which can be considered as a challenge for Amazon Kindle grayscale. Google's eBooks software allows users to read titles on a variety of devices, including the Sony Reader, Apple iPad and even—at least for those eBooks without digital rights management—the Kindle.
Amazon's own developing Kindle for Web app will allow users to purchase eBooks via a Website and read them within the browser. That would complement existing Kindle software for iPhone, Windows PC, Mac, BlackBerry, iPad, Android and Windows Phone 7 devices.
