Nokia has announced that its new flagship smartphone, the N8, will not be available until October because the company is fine-tuning the device to work with the new Symbian 3 operating system.

The phone, which was first announced in April, was expected to ship this month, but Nokia has now said it will not be released until next month.

Chris Bram, Nokia VP of sales for Middle East & Africa region, told a press event in Dubai yesterday that the N8 will be delayed as Nokia wanted to ensure perfect quality because it is using the new OS.

The N8 is the first device to use Symbian 3, and it also includes demanding hardware specifications, such as a 12 megapixel camera, leading to speculation that Nokia may be facing technical issues with the handset. Nokia has also reported a record number of online pre-orders for the N8.

In an official statement Nokia said: "The amount of preorders has exceeded our expectations and we are working hard to deliver the Nokia N8 to the market. In some markets, we had planned to start delivering the Nokia N8s to our pre-order customers by the end of September. To ensure a great user experience, we have decided to hold the shipments for a few weeks to do some final amends. We're thrilled with the response that we've had to the Nokia N8 and assure everyone who've pre-ordered it already that it'll be worth the wait! We expect consumers to get their Nokia N8s during October."

The N8 is being seen as the lead product in Nokia’s fightback to reclaim technology leadership and mindshare in the smartphone segment. While the company is still the leader by shipments, the company has lost some market share in the sector.

The new phone, which was due to retail for around EUR 370 (approx. AED 1,800), includes new features and enhancements such as greater support for multi-touch gestures, a more responsive user interface and more flexibility with personalised homescreens. Nokia is also due to launch a new marketing campaign for the phone, based around a short film shot entirely using the N8 starring Pamela Anderson.
